Soda drinks have become one of the most consumed drinks by many people. At various fast food restaurants, soda is the right drink to enjoy with your fries or hamburgers. In fact, a study funded by the American Beverage Association proves that people who consume diet soda can lose more weight (6 kg) than people who don't take it (only 4 kg) within 12 weeks. Researchers explain that people who drink soda are better able to cope with behavioral changes during diet in an effort to lose weight.

However, this research has been largely disputed by other studies that say that diet soda can actually increase body weight and increase the risk of certain diseases.

Other studies prove the opposite

Even though diet soda contains lower calories, diet soda still contains artificial sweeteners. Now, this artificial sweetener can cause you to gain weight.

Many studies link artificial sweeteners with increased appetite. One of them is a study conducted by Purdue University. This research proves that artificial sweeteners can interfere with the body's natural ability to assess and regulate calories from food.

Artificial sweeteners in diet soda can make the body confused. The body becomes less able to recognize the energy in the sweet liquid that enters your body. So, when your body feels that you have not received enough calories (even though you have received enough sugar), your body will increase your appetite. This can then cause you to gain weight.

Another study that followed more than 5000 adults for 7-8 years also proved that soda can cause weight gain. The more diet soda consumed, the more weight gain achieved by participants in the study.

The effect of drinking soda often, besides gaining weight

Not only is it associated with weight gain, soda is also associated with many diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes. Research conducted by the University of Minnesota has shown that drinking one can of diet soda per day can be associated with an increased risk of metabolic syndrome by 36%.

Metabolic syndrome describes a group of conditions, namely high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high cholesterol, and large waist circumference. This can then cause an increased risk of heart disease and diabetes.

In addition, soda is also associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis, tooth problems (such as cavities), trigger headaches, and even associated with risk of depression.
