Have you ever heard the term food combining? Some of you might even have practiced it. Combining food is now widely used for weight loss. This is a principle of eating that combines certain foods when eating. But, is this method really useful for losing weight or overall health?
Why is there a rule in food combining for separating certain types of food?
There are two reasons why food combining separates or combines certain types of foods, namely:
- Different types of food (such as carbohydrates, fats and proteins) will be digested by the body in different ways and speeds. If put together, this can cause "queues" of food to be digested in the body and have a negative impact on the digestive system. For example, it can cause flatulence, gas-filled stomach, or stomach ache.
- Different types of food require different enzymes to digest food. The enzyme works with different pH levels in the intestine. So, the body cannot digest different types of food at one time.
However, this doesn't seem right
In fact, there is no evidence to support these two reasons. Actually, food combining has been around for more than 100 years, where knowledge of nutrition and digestion has not developed. However, now that knowledge has developed and refuted it all.
The body can digest various types of food at one time
Every food almost always contains several combinations of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. And, the body is always able to digest it. For example, vegetables are a source of carbohydrates, but also contain several grams of protein. Meat is a source of protein, but also contains little fat.
So, you don't need to separate food while eating. The body is able to digest everything, it is a unified digestive process in the body. The digestive process of food starts from the mouth, then to the stomach, small intestine, and then the large intestine.
There will be no "queue" of digestible food in the stomach and cause the fermentation process. The stomach itself produces stomach acid which can kill bacteria so there will be no fermentation in the stomach. Fermentation will only occur in the large intestine, this is a mechanism that the body has to remove waste substances that are not needed.
Keep in mind, the human body has a digestive system, not a digestive bag. So, all the food can be digested by the body at one time with each mechanism. This is because the digestive process through which each nutrient is passed through food will be different. However, this process will not cause a "queue" of food to digest or ferment in the stomach.

The reason behind food combining is because each food has a different pH so that it can affect digestive enzymes. Indeed, digestive enzymes require certain pH levels to function in the body and enzymes in digestion require different phs to activate them.
However, eating foods with acidic or basic phases does not always change the digestive tract's pH. Your body is very smart than you can imagine. The body has its own mechanism to maintain pH in the digestive tract.
For example, the stomach lining secretes stomach acid, so it can control the acidity (ph) of the stomach. The pancreas which helps control the pH in the small intestine. With this mechanism, the digestive tract can overcome the acidity contained in food.
