Efficacy of coconut oil for teeth and mouth, can also prevent gum inflammation
Coconut oil contains lauric acid which is more effective at killing bacteria than other types of fatty acids - including streptococcal mutans, bacteria that cause bad breath, cavities, and tooth decay. The efficacy of coconut oil for teeth and mouth is reported by a study from the Journal of Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy. About 50 percent of the content of coconut oil consists of lauric acid.
Some studies even show coconut oil is almost as effective as chlorhexidine, an antiseptic solution commonly contained in mouthwash, to treat and prevent gingivitis (gingivitis).
This benefit is proven by a study from the Nigerian Medical Association which states that coconut oil can also reduce the buildup of dental plaque and fight gum disease. This study asked 60 people who had gingivitis to routinely gargle using natural coconut oil, a technique called oil pulling. As a result, symptoms of gum inflammation slowly subside after 7 days of routine oil pulling, and completely stopped 30 days later.
Other studies report that routine rinsing with coconut oil effectively erodes the layers of dental plaque and simultaneously prevents the formation of new plaques that cause gum infections.

Before feeling disgusted or surprised by this unique technique, rinsing with coconut oil has actually been used for generations as a natural method of maintaining oral and dental health.
The method is not difficult, almost like using mouthwash in general. Add one tablespoon (tbsp) of coconut oil to your mouth and gargle as usual for 15-20 minutes. Also make sure that the oil can reach between the teeth and gums with the help of the tongue. After that, dispose of coconut oil, rinse with rinsing water, and continue to brush your teeth as usual. The result will be better if done every day.
Alternatively, you can make natural toothpaste made from coconut oil. The way is by mixing:
- 100 grams of coconut oil (± 7 tbsp)
- 2 tablespoons of baking soda
- 10-20 drops of peppermint or cinnamon essential oil
Heat coconut oil until it melts, then add baking soda. Mix well until the texture is similar to toothpaste. Finally, add your favorite essential oil and store the toothpaste in a closed container.
