Have you ever felt your mood changed drastically, from feeling happy then a few moments later sobbed? You are not alone, because mood swing is a common thing during pregnancy, where your mood easily rises and falls.

Hormone levels in pregnant women are volatile, caused by elevated levels of estrogen and progesterone in the blood. This can affect your mood, so you feel sensitive easily.

Maybe your mood swing is caused by the perspective that pregnancy is a very new and important thing in your life. You feel very happy because you will soon have a baby, but on the one hand you are aware of what you will face.

Some common concerns during pregnancy are:

  • Can you be a good parent or not?
  • How can the presence of a baby affect your relationship with your husband?
  • Will your child be born healthy?
  • Will your finances be sufficient for your baby?
  • Changes in your body shape, and what will your husband's behavior change?

When does mood swing usually occur?

Mood swing usually occurs during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. You will find it difficult to control emotions during the first trimester. You will feel irritable or cry because of small things.

However, slowly you will stabilize, because your body adapts to changes in pregnancy hormones and you get used to your pregnancy.

You may experience rapid emotional changes in the last weeks of pregnancy or before labor.

How do you control mood swings during pregnancy?

Even though mood changes are caused by hormones and often are beyond your control, there are a number of things you can do, like the following:

  • Search for help . It's very natural if you want to do all the preparations before your baby is born. But not all things, such as decorating a baby's room, cleaning equipment, or shopping for baby gear must be done alone. You can ask your partner, family or friends for help.
  • Lots of rest . Take a nap if necessary. If you work and feel tired or stressed, consider taking time off for holidays. You might be able to take maternity leave early so you can prepare yourself before your baby's birth.
  • Have fun . Watch movies that make you happy, chat with friends, window shopping at the mall. Do anything that can make you forget about the busy life of pregnancy for a while. Take advantage of some time to pamper yourself.
  • Talk to someone . A powerful way to get rid of feelings of confusion is to talk about it with someone. Your friend or family will listen with sympathy, or talk to your doctor or midwife. You can also join the community, where you can share with other prospective mothers.
  • Sports . Exercise is known as a powerful mood booster. If you feel irritated or anxious, try swimming or walking while breathing fresh air. You can also take classes like yoga for pregnancy, which can calm your mind and train your body.
  • Spend time with your partner . Your partner may often be affected by extreme changes in your emotions. Show affection to your partner and give understanding not to enter into the heart if your mood swing is recurring. When you feel more calm, spend your time with your husband. This can strengthen your bond with your partner before the birth of your baby.
  • Stop feeling guilty . Pregnancy is an important point in your life. It is very natural that sometimes you feel overwhelmed, upset and anxious, even if you have long waited for the baby's presence. So, stop feeling guilty about the mood swing you feel.

If you feel that what you are experiencing is more than just a mood swing, talk to your doctor or midwife and share your problem.

About 10% of pregnant women experience depression during pregnancy. If you often feel down consistently, you might fall into this category.

An intense and frequent mood swing can indicate a condition of bipolar disorder or manic depression. This mood swing usually lasts only once for several weeks or months. Feelings will change from feelings of joy to extreme (depression) intense (low). Bipolar disorder rarely occurs for the first time during pregnancy. However, women who already have this condition may have a more severe bipolar condition during pregnancy.

If you feel that your mood swing is more severe than the usual mood swing, discuss it immediately with your doctor or midwife. They will help provide the handling you need.
