- Preeclampsia. This condition can affect overall maternal health. Severe preeclampsia can cause interference with kidney and liver function.
- Sleep apnea. Pregnant women who are obese are also more at risk of experiencing sleep apnea. This condition can cause fatigue and also increase the risk of high blood pressure, preeclampsia, eclampsia, and heart and lung disorders.
- Premature birth. Research from Stanford University School of Medicine shows that obese women before pregnancy have a higher risk of giving birth to premature babies before 28 weeks of pregnancy. Whereas, preterm birth at gestational age between 28-37 weeks was found not to be associated with obesity in the mother.
In addition, obesity during pregnancy can also place babies at a higher risk for birth defects, macrosomia (baby size is greater than normal), premature birth, and stillbirth.
A study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the United States also showed that obese women before pregnancy are two to three times more likely to have a baby with heart defects and birth defects.
Not only is associated with risk during pregnancy, but excessive weight before pregnancy can also be associated with problems that can occur after childbirth. One study found that being overweight or obese can also reduce the level of the hormone prolactin (the hormone of breastfeeding) after giving birth. This can cause overweight women who tend to stop breastfeeding earlier than women who have normal weight.
Should I lose weight before becoming pregnant?
If you have a fat body, losing weight before pregnancy is the best way to get a healthy pregnancy and reduce the risk of complications during pregnancy. Losing weight at least 5-7% of your current body weight or about 4.5-9 kg can improve your overall health and increase your chances of getting a healthy pregnancy.
Do weight loss in a healthy way by changing your lifestyle to be healthier. Consumption of balanced nutritious food and regular exercise is the healthiest way to lose weight. Your weight will decrease if the energy that enters through food is smaller than the energy you spend through activity.
